Proud Sorrow

Location:  Africa, Mali

The contrast of gorgeous, flowing robes, headdress & jewelry with the difficult, and sometimes quite primitive conditions in Africa, made an impression.  Since the painting was completed when the world became aware of the humanitarian crisis in Darfur,  I was moved to name the painting in honor of the women who remain so elegant and beautiful, while living in deplorable, sorrowful conditions in refugee camps.
